Vex personality type is INTJ, so it's easy for me to understand why.
It's also easy for me to relate to as I am an INTJ too. I'm a little less interested in politics, which makes me only a little less likely to believe that the world is a soulless place, but the lack of interest isn't really the problem. It's just that the world is a soulless place and I don't really see the point of pretending that it isn't.
Now, part of what attracted me to Vex was his constant mocking of the idea of "playing with fire" and "playing the game" and generally poking fun at people who are too serious about the game. I think that is a very important part of playing D&D. The game is fun, but part of what makes it fun is that it's supposed to be silly, and part of what makes it silly is mocking the seriousness that people bring to it. If you take it too seriously, you're going to spoil the fun.
In any case, as I was reading this book, I couldn't help but think that playing with fire is actually not too far from the truth.
